There was someone else in the room.

Brynn sat up, clutching the duvet to her chest. She could feel her heart beating double-time. “Who’s there?”

Her eyes adjusted slowly to the dim light. The sound of shallow breathing drew her attention to the far side of her bed. “Carissa?”

The little girl stood silently at her bedside, watching Brynn with unblinking eyes. The sheen of tears tracked down her cheeks.

“What’s wrong, honey?” Brynn reached out a hand and smoothed the girl’s sleep-tangled curls away from her face.

“I had a bad dream.” Her voice was barely above a whisper. “Real bad.”

“Oh, come here, sweetie.” She took Carissa by the hand and pulled her up onto the bed. The girl sat cross-legged on top of the duvet, twirling a lock of hair around her finger. Brynn waited, but she suddenly seemed hesitant to talk. “Do you want to tell me about it?”

Carissa mumbled something; even straining, Brynn couldn’t hear.

“What was that?”

“My mommy.” Carissa stared straight ahead, twisting the hair more tightly around her finger. “She went away, and I couldn’t remember what she looked like.”

She wrapped an arm around the little girl and tucked her under the duvet. “Why don’t you rest a little,” she said, wiping the traces of tears off Carissa’s face. “I’ll make sure the bad dreams don’t find you.”
